However, this field has a lot of specializations, all of which can be learned in the best Bachelor’s Degrees in Graphic Design. In this guide, we’ll help you with your school search by listing the best graphic design bachelor’s degrees available, including online and in-person graphic design bachelor’s degree programs. BU's bachelor of arts in graphic design develops the visual communication skills you need to create effective design solutions.

Artists with a knack for technology are well-positioned for professional success in the modern job market, as the demand for digital art assets has never been higher. The most important fact to know about becoming a graphic designer is that you are entering a very competitive, and rapidly changing industry with high demands that judge everything by results. With the ability to apply every eight weeks, you can essentially start any time of the year.

However, with the increasing relevance of 3D animation in video games, films, and even VR/AR environments, animation work is an excellent growth opportunity for graphic artists. Code monkeys with a knack for web design can enter the fields of UX/UI, while managerial adepts can pursue a career as an art director. The final part of the curriculum worth mentioning is relevant to both the initial application process and the completion criteria. As opposed to many other degree programs, being accepted into one of these programs is typically contingent on submitting a portfolio.

In addition, we only included colleges with graduation rates in the top third of all online colleges. To apply, you need a GED certificate or a high school diploma with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. If you have fewer than 24 transferable credits, you also need an ACT score of 19 or better. Admission requires a high school diploma with acceptable college preparation coursework or a high school equivalency test with qualifying scores.

Entry-level roles in graphic design tend to hover around $50,000 per year or $25 per hour for contractors. Specializing in web design, animation, or leadership is a great way to boost that salary significantly. Designers can increase their value through specialization as graphic design combines tech knowledge with functional skills (art creation and design). While there’s too much variation for an easy average, $500 per credit hour is a fairly safe bet for a reasonably reputable degree program. This will come to around $15,000 per year or $60,000 for the program from start to finish.

Best Jobs According to Your Major

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Graphic Design provides in-depth study of the field of graphic design. The degree is a professional degree that prepares students to enter a career in design, advertising, marketing, or other fields of visual communication. The degree requires 78 credit hours of courses in the department, and many courses are sequential. It is important to begin taking three studio art courses and one art history course during the first semester of study. Students should not complete the General Education courses before beginning the courses in the major, as that will delay time to graduation. A four-year schedule of the major is available online or from the department academic advisor.

You may opt for either the Digital Media Design or Print/Advertising Design concentration within the minor. The Art History minor is an excellent addition to majors in History, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and English. Please contact the Department Chair directly at [email protected] with any questions regarding this process. You can apply directly to the B.F.A. in Graphic Design by completing the St. John's Undergraduate Application.

jazz cruise 2023 lineup

Several ships have very nice main theaters, but, as our guests know, our music is presented throughout the ship, so the size and number of secondary venues is also important. Programming The Jazz Cruise starts with nearly 100 world-class musicians, scheduling them in exciting configurations for over 200 hours of music, and presenting the music festival-style over seven jam-packed days. The Jazz Cruise ’25 will feature more headliner performers than ever before and many of them will be participating in the legendary jam and all-star sessions. This amazing combination of factors creates our very own Straight-Ahead Jazz Heaven. Since 2001, The Jazz Cruise has set the standard for jazz entertainment at sea, and, in the minds of many has become the most significant “straight-ahead” jazz event in the world.

THE SHIP

In 2008, Washington played with The Blue Note 7, an all-star septet formed in honor of Blue Note Records’ 70th Anniversary. His more than 400 recordings speak to a constant demand for his talents, including performing with longtime colleague Bill Charlap on this cruise. Robin Eubanks is one of the premier jazz trombonists of his generation. Whether performing with his groups, EB3 or Mental Images, or with the critically acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band, Robin is an artist whose impact on audiences has proven powerful and lasting. Robin has recorded more than seven albums as a leader featuring his original music. Kevin would go on to work with jazz greats such as Art Blakey, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Ron Carter and others.

These Pass-Through Charges vary by Stateroom Type for The Smooth Jazz Cruise and are in addition to the Cruise Prices. Featured in nearly 200 recordings – including 16 Grammy® Award-winning titles – with the likes of Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme and Herb Ellis, Jeff also teaches, arranges, and composes for the drums. Mentored by legends such as Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown, Jeff in turn has been a teacher and inspiration to multiple generations of young musicians. Kevin, along with brothers Duane and Robin, was born into a musical household in Philadelphia, PA.

The purchase of Travel Insurance/Trip Protection is strongly encouraged.

Performing Groups

In addition to working in other bands, Kevin became the leader of his own groups that have toured all over the world. He has recorded more than 15 albums as a leader, plus several as a co-leader with artists like Orrin Evans and Stanley Jordan. The Jazz Cruise ’25 will be the 25th Anniversary sailing of this special event. Join us for the celebration of the program and of this amazing music.

The musicians themselves call the program “Straight-Ahead Jazz Heaven”. The Jazz Cruise knows him best as the most influential person in the history and development of the program. From the start (2001), Houston has been the heart and soul of the cruise, offering his music in a style that makes everyone happy. His grace and leadership have kept The Jazz Cruise on the right track for more than 20 years. Jazz Cruises is excited to announce that the third edition of The Smooth Jazz Cruise On Land in St. Louis was a huge success. The first night was totally sold out and the second night came very close as well.

Jazz Cruises is excited to announce STL Jazz Fest, two nights of amazing music presented by Jazz Cruises, the GOLD standard of jazz at sea since 2001. Botti at Sea ’24 was the first sailing of this program, and, by all standards, it was a runaway hit. Reaching fully reserved status months before sailing was an indication of the excitement the cruise generated, and the sailing only confirmed that the hype was real. Botti at Sea II (’25) sports another amazing lineup and, if possible, Host Chris Botti has vowed to be even more active and involved than he was on Botti at Sea ’24. Jazz Cruises strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport with at least six (6) months validity post-cruise during their sailing. All Guests are required to pay port charges, government taxes and fees, onboard service gratuities for shipboard staff and other charges due and payable to third parties.

These benchmarks of excellence were cultivated by Anita E. Berry, founder of The Jazz Cruise, during her participation in cruise line sponsored jazz cruise programs during the 1980’s and 1990’s. When learning that the cruise lines were abandoning these programs, Anita took up the challenge of producing the very first full ship charter dedicated to “straight-ahead” jazz. More than 23 years later, The Jazz Cruise remains the only full ship charter of that theme and is the standard by which all music charters are measured. Currently the Millennium Class ships of Celebrity Cruises provide us with the best opportunity to present our programs.

His mother, Vera Eubanks, was Kenny Barron’s first piano teacher. Duane crossed over to play and record with Alicia Keys, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Wu-Tang Clan, and Kirk Franklin. He has played the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center, as well as toured throughout Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. His most recent albums as a bandleader are Things of that Particular Nature and DE3-Live at Maxwell’s, both on Sunnyside. Alonzo Bodden, winner of Last Comic Standing and Jazz Cruises’ Comedian-in-Chief, will perform his hilarious show for an additional two nights of late-night entertainment and laughs.

Houston’s appearances as sideman are legion, and include recordings with Etta Jones, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Dakota Staton, Horace Silver, Charles Earland, Joey DeFrancesco, and many others. As a record producer, he has worked with many artists, including Etta Jones, Freddy Cole, Charles Brown, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, Dakota Staton, and Ernie Andrews. The Jazz Cruise lineups are comprised of nearly 100 of the very top jazz musicians in the world. Over the years, several musicians have become mainstays of the cruise and return nearly every year. Another large group of musicians are frequent, though not perennial participants, and, whenever possible The Jazz Cruise features a musician who is either new on the scene or simply new to the cruise.

Which show you attend is determined when you complete your Reservation and is reflected in the color of your Cruise Identification Card (BLUE or RED). On all other nights, the Celebrity Theatre hosts large group presentations and special shows that require greater seating capacity. For these shows, the “Festival Style” open entry and seating procedures are in effect with the same regulations as those in any other venue. Beginning in the 1990s, he toured with the Tommy Flanagan Trio and he has played with the Bill Charlap Trio since the mid ‘90s. He was a founding member of the collective sextet One for All and is a visiting artist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

For years, Jeff has served as the untitled co-producer of The Jazz Cruise aiding our staff with insights and ideas that have made The Jazz Cruise so special. Trumpeter Duane Eubanks is a multi-talented force whose fiery blasts and sweet distinctive sound carry his horn into a musical space that defies categorization. There’s a gritty soul and passion that emphatically captures his Philadelphia roots.

This combination of musicians creates excitement and enthusiasm, while maintaining a solid base upon which the aura of the cruise is built. Before or after your cruise, you can discover all that the Fort Lauderdale area has to offer. Capture the sights of the Everglades, an expanse of swampland known for natural beauty and abundant wildlife, including exotic birds, fish and the infamous alligators. Experience the local beaches and cafes, including the Arts & Sciences District; stroll the historic Riverwalk; and shop the boutiques on Las Olas Boulevard. Board a double-decker yacht or paddlewheeler-style boat and journey down the New River, out into the Intracoastal Waterway to Port Everglades, checking out the luxury houses and more. Another specialty of The Jazz Cruise is our series of “Learn” events, which include one-on-one musician interviews, panel discussions, instrument seminars and tutorials, and presentations of special topics for our music lovers.

Cozumel effortlessly balances its flashy side with a natural, unblemished beauty. The tropical climate promises heat, plentiful sunshine, and pristine beaches for every kind of traveler. Divers love Cozumel for its clear waters and preserved coral reefs.

He began playing trumpet at 11 but didn’t consider music as a career until college. While studying for a business degree at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Duane joined the university’s jazz band. He jumpstarted himself into opportunities to play with jazz luminaries Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Scott, Charles Fambrough and Clark Terry. Duane studied jazz in master classes at Temple University with the legendary Dr. Billy Taylor. He was later tapped by the late pianist Mulgrew Miller to join his ensemble, Wingspan. Acclaimed bassist/bandleader Dave Holland invited Duane to play with his big band on a pair of Grammy® award-winning albums.

PAST DRUM & BASS EVENTS

Anchored by an amazing main theater (Celebrity Theatre), which seats more than half our guests at one time, those ships have significant additional performance venues (Sky Lounge, Rendezvous Lounge, Foyer, Pool Deck). And, as we saw upon our first inspection of the ships, there is an amazing bonus venue. With a little imagination, we convert the main dining room (The Cosmopolitan Restaurant) into a performance venue most afternoons and a gorgeous jazz cabaret every evening. Known worldwide for its first-class jazz cruise programs, Jazz Cruises applies its skills and commitment equally to land based events. For many years, Jazz Cruises has presented The Smooth Jazz Cruise on Land in St. Louis.

Pass-Through Charges

Stay tuned for information about The Smooth Jazz Cruise on Land in St. Louis IV. No jazz program would be complete without cocktails, wine and food. The Jazz Cruise takes that to another level by pairing these events with performers who serve as hosts. It may be a Happy Hour Hang or a fine dining experience, but you can be there with your favorite performer. On two nights of the Cruise (the 1st Night and Formal Night), special shows (“The Jazz Cruise Welcome Show” and “The Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame Show”) are presented in the Celebrity Theatre. Each such show will be performed twice, with half of the guests attending the 1st Show and the other half attending the 2nd Show.

This year we are expanding our musical offerings to reflect more of our cruise programs and music. When in port, lectures and other events are planned for the early part of the day and the music typically starts around 4 pm. Daytime music shows may be presented in any of the music venues (Celebrity Theatre, Rendezvous Lounge or Sky Lounge). Special shows may also be seen and heard in The Cosmopolitan Restaurant, the main dining room of the ship, which converts brilliantly into a cabaret-style music venue. Some of the most revered shows on the cruise (The Jazz Cruise T-Shirt Party, Wycliffe Gordon’s Gospel Show and Keyboard Capers) are performed during the daytime hours.

There will be two sailings, the first will be January 20 – 27, 2023, and the second sailing will be January 27 – February 3, 2023. Jeff is also the co-leader of the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (the Grammy® -nominated big band that provides backup for Diana Krall). The Jeff Hamilton Trio featuring Tamir Hendelman and John Hamar, has been a pillar of The Jazz Cruise for nearly two decades.

Jazz Cruises extends an onboard credit of $125 to any guest who is either Active Military or a Veteran. DD2-14 confirmation of military status is required for Military Benefits. There will be more artists.....Too many to mention here, so check out the video below. He has sailed numerous times on The Jazz Cruise as an All-Star but returns in 2025 to perform with his two brothers.

Starting on February 15, 2022, Open Booking starts for The Jazz Cruise ’23. The casual and formal dining areas have been transformed as well, giving the ship a sleeker and more contemporary look and feel. These ships continue to offer a fabulous array of dining choices, spectacular spa facilities and beautiful bars and lounges. In choosing a ship for The Jazz Cruise, several factors are considered. The quality of the ship’s accommodations, services, food, and staff are all key factors. Driven by our focus on presenting “The Greatest Straight-Ahead Jazz Festival at Sea” in the finest possible manner, we focus heavily on the size, number, and variety of the ship’s performance venues.

His brothers are celebrated trombonist Robin Eubanks and guitarist Kevin Eubanks, with whom he’ll perform on The Jazz Cruise. Grand Cayman is an enchanting island of long, sandy beaches, translucent water, and spectacular marine life. The island is also home to the country’s capital, George Town, which has a waterfront lined by wooden buildings in bright colors. Museums, galleries and other cultural highlights, such as The Cayman Islands National Museum, Pure Art Gallery, and Heroes Square are all located in George Town as well. On others, it’s simply the lowest deck that’s accessible to passengers. The best deck on a cruise ship for motion sickness is the lowest passenger deck. Having an experience that is private, safe, and restful while you are at sea will be important when enjoying your cruise. However, if you are not prone to becoming seasick, you can select a cabin located in the midship area on the upper decks. Stairs can be used to take in the fresh sea air or to relax in the morning sun. If you are concerned about getting seasick, the best deck on a cruise ship is in the lowest part of the ship, near the central areas.

Midship staterooms on the lowest passenger deck are the best spot to be on a cruise ship in this instance because you don't feel the vessel sway as much. Whether you choose a lower deck for stability, a middle deck for convenient access, an upper deck for stunning views, or a promenade deck for a unique ambiance, each deck offers its own advantages. The important thing is to find the deck that suits your needs and allows you to enjoy your cruise to the fullest. In summary, the upper decks of a cruise ship offer unparalleled views, tranquility, and a sense of luxury. If you value breathtaking panoramas, privacy, and don’t mind a potentially higher cost, the upper decks may be the perfect choice for your cruise experience.

Additionally, if you’re someone who values peace and quiet, you’ll want to avoid cabins near high-traffic areas like elevators, staircases, and entertainment venues. Choosing the right stateroom location on a cruise ship is about understanding your personal preferences and needs. For some, the priority will be avoiding seasickness at all costs, while others may prefer a balance between comfort, convenience, and budget. Ultimately, the goal is to make your voyage as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Below the passenger cabins, there are the crew cabins, the engine room and other facilities such as the laundry, jail and medical centre. On ships with passenger cabins on Deck 1, the decks beneath have names such as Deck A, Deck B and Deck C. On cruise ships, decks are numbered from bottom to top, starting from Deck 1 and going up at high as 20 or more. On most cruise ships, the lowest decks aren’t accessible to passengers, and you board the ship on Deck 4 or Deck 5.

One of the main advantages of the upper decks is their unobstructed views. Since they are positioned higher up on the ship, passengers can enjoy sweeping views of the horizon, sunsets, and the beauty of the open sea. Imagine waking up to the sight of endless blue waters or witnessing the vibrant hues of a sunset from the comfort of your stateroom balcony.

Best Deck on a Cruise Ship How to Choose

You can pop in to grab a quick bite from BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burgers, or the buffet whenever hunger strikes. The higher the deck, the more you are likely to feel the ship swaying. This is also the situation for rooms at the very front or back of the ship. When choosing a cabin on a cruise ship, the deck you select can play a significant role in your overall experience. Here, I will provide a breakdown of the cabin options available on various decks to help you make an informed decision. You'll want to weigh the pros and cons of any deck based on your preferences.

The best deck for those with mobility impairment

This option offers the benefit of outdoor space for relaxation, dining, and enjoying the surroundings. If you have mobility considerations, it's a wise choice to select a stateroom situated near an elevator on the lower deck, where the dining area is typically situated. Given the necessity for regular meals throughout the day, having the elevator in close proximity ensures convenient access to other decks.

Decks Close to Services

There’s no Deck 13; seafarers are a superstitious crowd and the number is considered unlucky. Freestyle Travelers is the ultimate resource for cruisers seeking to explore the seas. Balcony vs Club Balcony Suite: A Comparison on Norwegian Cruise Line

Strolling around the Prom Deck is a wonderful activity to enjoy early in the morning, after dinner or before bed. But as lovely as the promenade deck is, it can be one of the worst locations for a cruise cabin. The cabins on the lowest passenger deck are usually the cheapest and there’s a good reason for that. In the lowest part of a cruise ship, there’s a whole lot of noisy stuff so you may hear the hum of the engine, the blast of the bow thrusters and the clanging of the anchor chain.

best deck in cruise ship

In this case, the best cabin is located near other cabins rather than close to activity areas. Going on a cruise – whether it’s a river cruise or an ocean venture – should be a wonderful adventure and an experience you will always cherish. But if you are seasick, uncomfortable, or surrounded by noise, then you will not enjoy it.

Suite

With us by your side, you can easily find the perfect cruise for your needs and budget. A ‘Guaranteed Cabin’ gives you the assurance of being allocated at least the category of cabin you paid for, if not one of superior quality. However, this level is in closer proximity to machinery such as engines and anchor chains, which can contribute to an audible presence, especially when the ship is navigating through ports. To ensure a restful sleep, it might be wise to select a cabin a couple of floors further down, away from the hubbub.

The sound of music, chatter, and the general buzz of activity can easily seep into nearby cabins, challenging the quest for a peaceful night’s sleep. However, these locations can become a source of disturbance due to noise that extends well into the night. Selecting a cabin near nightlife venues like clubs, bars, or lounges might seem appealing for those looking to immerse themselves in the ship’s social scene. When it comes to accommodations on the base passenger deck, one can typically find more budget-friendly options. This is less of an issue if you’re an early riser, but can be quite inconvenient otherwise. Moreover, during overnight port stops, there could be a stream of people returning to the ship through the night.

The Best Deck To Avoid Motion Sickness – Low

The allure of the lower decks lies in their proximity to the ocean’s surface, offering a more tactile connection with the sea. The elevated position provides an unparalleled panoramic vista, enhancing your cruise experience by bringing the vast beauty of the ocean and coastline directly to you. Nonetheless, for travelers prioritizing a restful environment and affordability, the lower decks present an ideal choice. These decks tend to be more tranquil, as they are distanced from the hustle and bustle of the nightlife and crowded public spaces.

However, counting the decks on your cruise ship might be a bit trickier than it seems. The actual number of decks differs from the number of passenger decks, or areas on the ship where guests are allowed. Let's dispel with the notion that there is a universal deck choice that's perfect for everyone, because there isn't such a thing. Instead, there are reasons to pick one deck over another depending on your personal preferences.

However, cabins on the lower decks typically do not offer balconies due to their proximity to the sea. If you are (or think you might be) prone to seasickness, the lower decks would be your best bet. Or if you feel comforted by private outside space open to the sea breezes, then opt for a veranda stateroom on the lowest possible deck, at the center. Motion sickness is something a lot of new cruisers fear, often without need, as contemporary ships are smooth and stable.

Someone that does not get seasick will have more choices than someone who does get seasick. Likewise, a suite guest will want to choose a deck differently than someone staying in an inside cabin. On this deck on each ship, you'll usually find the buffet, bars and entertainment like a big outdoor screen for movies. Sports courts and activities like ropes courses, mini-golf, water parks and other wet and wild attractions are located at or toward the top of the ship, as well. The higher the deck, the better and, often, more panoramic the view. Cabins on top decks aren't always the best on the ship, but many suites and specialty cabin categories are typically located on upper decks.

They also come with a range of amenities, including spacious balconies, separate living areas, and even personal butler service on some cruise lines. Which deck you stay on will heavily influence your cruising experience, as will the cabin you stay in. Of course, depending on your travel preferences, you may prefer one deck or cabin over another. There are no hard or fast rules as to which deck or cabin type is “best.” It’s all about what’s best for you. On the other hand, upper decks offer a premium experience with luxurious accommodations, exclusive dining options, and breathtaking panoramic views for those seeking a more upscale stay.
